This past week was a tough one for our team. We had a lot of girls that were out sick and it really made it hard to have team practices with all of the girls that were out. Despite this the girls that remained worked hard and found a way to have productive practices with all of the absence. This past week was also the first week that we were back from spring break and that first morning workout was rough. We now know that we can’t take a week off from doing workouts because that just sets us back.
This past weekend was also Easter weekend and I know a lot of the girls were excited to get to go and spend the weekend with their families. It was nice to have two breaks back to back, because I know that every once in a while everyone needs a mental break. However, this was also a good week for us to catch up on all of our homework especially seeing as how finals are right around the corner and we need all of the getting ahead we can get. This was also an exciting week because we got to meet with our advisor and plan our schedules for next semester. It was bittersweet for a couple of our senior who were registering for their final classes that they need for graduation.
This next week we have our very first scrimmage against St. Edwards University, which just so happen to be our rivals in our conference. I know we are all very eager to have an opportunity to showcase our skills and everything that we have learned throughout our spring season. It has been tough for everyone to adapt to all the changes, however we know that all these will make us better in the long run. We are excited for the rest of our matches during the spring and cannot wait to see what the fall brings.
This spring break was definitely one to remember, I can confidently say that for both myself and the team. We were all able to see and experience new things, visit family and friends that we hadn’t seen in a while, and have some time to relax and take a break from our busy schedules.
My spring break started a little bit early when I traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico. I had been before but I didn’t remember it being so beautiful. The water was so clear and blue, the food was amazing, and it was great to be able to spend quality time with my family. We explored so many exciting things such as the rainforest as we zip lined through it, the private islands which we snorkeled at and the historic forts that played a huge role in the existence of Puerto Rico. This island is definitely a place that I would never get tired of and visit many, many more times.
Channing had a spring break that I don’t think she will ever forget. She visited South Padre Island with some of her closest friends and went to a huge 3 day concert the island hosts called UME. This concert featured dozens of different artists some of which she already knew, and some that she didn’t. She said it was a long 5 days with very little sleep but it was worth every minute.
Maddy Walsh went home to Arlington Texas where she spent a lot of time with family. First she attended her cousins wedding which she says was wonderful. After the wedding, she went to her lake house on Lake Texoma with her grandparents, parents, and sisters. The lake house is Maddy’s favorite place to be because of the beautiful scenery and relaxation. Maddy changed her hairstyle to one that not many people can pull off! She loves the short hair and bangs but is a little bit concerned about it when it comes to staying up and out of her face during workouts and practice!
Alex, Rachael, and Tarine were all sad to have work during the break but were able to visit Six Flags Fiesta Texas here in San Antonio with a few other athletes who attend St. Mary’s. Although they said the lines were extremely long, and the weather was very hot, that didn’t stop them from having a great time with each other!
Maddi King, visited Daytona Beach in Florida with a few friends for three days. She said she loved every second of it but she was happy to return home because being in the constant sun drained her and she ended up getting sunburnt.
Allison when back home to Houston where she was able to spend quality time with her family. While she was there, Allison also changed the style of her hair; she straightened the curls and it looks great! Since her hair takes very long to straighten, we never really get to see it that way. Allison was sad to leave her family in Houston but was also ready to be back in San Antonio!
Megan took a trip to Minnesota for a few days where she shopped at the Mall of America and got a huge Stich stuffed animal! After the trip to Minnesota, Megan went back home to New Braunfels and spent quality time with her mom until it was time to come back to San Antonio.
Lauren spent time with her family and fiancé searching for potential wedding venues. She is so excited to be at this stage in her life but still can’t believe it!
This past we week we welcomed our new coach Callaway Mefford to the St. Mary’s Volleyball family. As a team we are so excited to see what this change brings to the program and the experience of playing college volleyball. From day one it already seemed like a fresh change of pace and we are dedicated to putting in all the effort to make this next season one to remember.
Daily workouts started to pick up steam as they moved to the morning and Coach Callaway laid out the ground rules, her expectations, and started fitness testing. With her expectations have come many changes. These changes include having nutrition and water goals, keeping a goal sheet for every game and practice, a change in the offensive system and many more. These changes will let us track our progress not only through the spring but also into the fall when we start our season. We are also very excited about what this change will bring to the team dynamic and work ethic.
As a team we also participated in the annual chili cook-off where many different organizations sign up and have a taste testing of the chili they make. We also used this opportunity to recruit people to follow us on social media to stay updated on all volleyball news including games and events. It was fun time for us to interact with the school and meet new people. Afterwards we went to support the softball team and to watch the retirement of an alum’s jersey to the hall of fame.
This past week we also hosted four recruits on campus. Two were from junior colleges and two were from high school. Each of them stepped up their game to play with us and showed true potential in their ability. Every one of them contributed to the competitive atmosphere that we strive for everyday on the court. We also have one more coming in next week and we are just waiting to see what she could possibly add to our team atmosphere.
On Friday we showed our love as a team for our donors by writing personalized thank you notes to them. Their contributions allow us to get new equipment, travel, and their donations also help us be able to afford our education. We each wrote about four cards and it was great way for us to show our appreciation to those who helped further advance our experience at St. Mary’s.
Lastly to wrap up the week, on Sunday we all gathered at Coach’s house for a team bonding/dinner experience. As a team we are already a close-knit family who loves each other and it was a great way to add our new Coach into the family by getting to know her and her family. We also got a little peak at how we view our teammates and ourselves in a fun game where Coach would read out a question and you and your partner held up whether you thought the question applies to you or your partner. We also got to experience her husband’s delicious cooking while entertaining ourselves by playing and watching her two adorable little girls. Team bonding/dinner night was just the first of many fun and memorable nights to come for the team.
As we head off into the remainder of the spring we are excited about what all this change will bring and how it will take the St. Mary’s Volleyball program to the next level. We all believe that Coach Callaway will do great things here at St. Mary’s and can’t wait to see how we will be not just as a team, but also as athletes in general within the coming months.
