This past week for StMU volleyball has been extremely successful but not without it's ups and downs. We took on Texas A&M Kingsville and Texas A&M International and came out on top in both matches. While we may have won both of these games, it was not without a lot of hard work and discipline in practice the days before that we were able to get the wins in both of these games.
Practice this week involved a lot of communication between hitters and setters, serve receive, and most importantly of all, out of system balls. As a team we know we are dominant when we are able to get balls in system, but we struggle to put balls down and to keep them in play when we are out of system either out of serve receive or in defense. We worked a lot with setters on playing the first ball, defense taking the second ball, and hitters hitting the 55 ball (five feet off the net five feet inside the court) aggressively and smartly placed inside the court. We also focused on keeping our serving aggressive, which is one of our teams strong suits.
First we took on Kingsville, who during season we took a pretty tough loss to but we were all ready to come out onto our home court and show them that just because we may have taken the loss last time, did not mean were about to do the same thing again. In the first set we came back from being down the entire game until about point 18 and ended up taking the set. We came into the second set with lots of confidence and took that set as well. While we ended up falling to them in the second set, we eventually came back even stronger in the fourth set to clinch the overall win. This was a great and important victory for us because it proved that we can take down tough teams.
The match against Texas A&M International was more of a mental challenge than any of us could have imagined. We came into the match winning the first set and then had to battle back against mental and physical adversity after losing the following set. We were then in the fifth set of the game against International and while everyone was tired, everyone fought hard to win the fifth and final set to win the match and leave us with a 2-0 record for the week.
The wins may not have been entirely easy ones this week for St. Mary's Volleyball, but in the end all of the hard work put into practice, scouting film, and playing in the actual games, paid off. Coming into this next week we are going to continue to try and keep our stats getting better and better and to continue working well together as a team.
